About this Session

Dr. Goh wei leong, Dr. tan lai yong & James quek

The Psalmist reminds us: “Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne…” Psalms 89:14

During this difficult COVID-19 crisis, we have seen vulnerable communities hit the hardest. Going beyond short-term measures, how shall we serve the ‘last, least and lost’ in our midst? As marketplace gatekeepers, how may our business and work be catalysts for righteousness and justice in our nations?

Come put on new ‘mindskins’ as we think deeper and hear from Dr Goh Wei Leong, Dr Tan Lai Yong and James Quek who are at the forefront of these challenges.

OUR SPEAKERS

Dr Goh Wei Leong, a general practitioner, co-founded and chairs HealthServe, an NGO that reaches out to under-served foreign workers in Singapore. HealthServe and Wei-Leong were awarded the ‘Singaporean of the Year 2017’.

Associate Prof. Dr Tan Lai Yong is Director for Outreach and Community Engagement at the College of Alice & Peter Tan – CAPT and an Adjunct Senior Lecturer at the NUS Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health. Dr Tan is known for his efforts in providing free medical treatment and advice to Bangladeshi and Indian foreign workers in Singapore and had spent 15 years in Yunnan providing rural medical services to the less fortunate there.

James Quek is founder of the ethical maid agency, MyHelper, a registered social enterprise. He was previously the Executive Director of World Vision Singapore. In his travels to the projects, he saw that women were the standard bearers in taking care of the family. When things became untenable, many had to make sacrifices by becoming maids overseas or by sending their daughters to work as maids overseas to support the family. In many instances they risk being the victims of exploitation and human trafficking rings. James Quek hopes to make life a little easier for these hardy women who have left the safety and comfort of their homes in search of work opportunities in Singapore.
